Liam Barnes of Rossland takes top honours at the REEL Youth International Film Festival

Rossland's Liam Barnes swept both the People's Choice and Judges Pick prizes at the REEL Youth International Film Festival in Rossland with his exhilarating and beautifully filmed piece, "Surge Freerun: Year One".

Five local submissions were well received by a crowd of over 100, who enjoyed Mackenzie Flood's (Rossland) hilarious "Bush Hobo" piece, 2 thoughtful documentaries by Rosslander James Klemmensen: "A Walk in the Forest" and "More than just the Music", and the action-packed "Zombie Apocalypse" by Trail's Jordan Strobel.

A remarkable youth committee ranging from Grades 6-11 pulled the event together, taking on MC duties, decorating, and planning. It was their unique ideas, enthusiasm and astonishing energy that made the event successful and endlessly enjoyable. Thanks guys!

Organizers KAST and the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture were thrilled to welcome a community of parents, teachers, teens and kids keen on film the November 26, 2011 event and are looking forward to the next big event in local youth filmaking: the U19 Film Fest and Gala on April 14, 2012 at Trail's Royal Theatre.
