Employment Dates: Jan 30 - June 1, 2012.

Requirements: Candidates for the KAST GLOWS Liaison position must be full-time secondary/post-secondary students aged 16 or older, be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.  

Wage: $12/hour and mileage reimbursement.

Schedule: Up to 10 hours per week for 16 weeks of employment, and 30 hours per week for an additional two weeks of employment during spring break (March 12-23, 2012). The schedule can be relatively flexible – details to be negotiated with the chosen candidate.

Location: KAST office #108-2196 LeRoi Ave, Rossland. The position requires frequent independent travel to Basin communities including Nelson, Slocan, Kootenay Lake, Castlegar, and Trail, BC.

Description of Position/Duties: KAST is a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the successful growth of science, technology and innovation in the West and Central Kootenays. The GLOWS Liaison will represent KAST’s “Growing, Learning Opportunities with Science (GLOWS)” programming for children and youth during the employment period, assisting educators to access and implement GLOWS initiatives such as science fairs. The GLOWS liaison will work closely with KAST’s program coordinator to plan and deliver GLOWS events and new initiatives, be a science & technology ambassador to Basin teachers, parents, kids and youth, and work specifically with local teens to research and develop effective new programs.

The student employee will also undertake and assist with other science and technology-related projects under the supervision of KAST staff.

The successful candidate:

The successful candidate will be an energetic and creative self-starter with an enthusiasm for science and technology and a keen interest in and aptitude for working with both educators and kids/youth ranging in age from 6-18 years. Patience, professionalism and independent research and problem-solving abilities are essential. Some technological aptitude is strongly preferred.
