Circuits and Coding and MindStorms, oh my!
On Saturday, November 10th, KAST celebrated another successful marrriage of creativity and tech savvy with the completion of our first annual "Circuit Training" and RoboGames robotics training and competition for teen teams from across the region.
This partnership with the Nelson Tech Club (NTC) guided 24 teens ages 11-16 from Nelson, Trail, Rossland and New Denver through a four-week process of robotics learning, culminating in a regional robot showdown at Selkirk College in Nelson.
The teams faced off on an obstacle course and a soccer competition, and demonstrated their creativity and newfound programming know-how with the presentation of a unique "trick". Title sponsor TECK, and key KAST partners Selkirk College and the NTC provided much-appreciated judging expertise.
Congratulations to first place winners R.T.F from Rossland Secondary, sponsored by Focus Engineering
...and to the remarkable young people who made KAST-GLOWS' RoboDreams come true in 2012:
- Trail Technocrats from Glenmerry Elementary - sponsored by AMEC
- Traf.RAMmers from Trafalgar Middle School (Nelson) - sponsored by D-Pace
- QUADCORE.traf from Trafalgar Middle School (Nelson) - sponsored by Omineca Solar
- NEXUS from LV Rogers Secondary (Nelson) - sponsored by Your Event Without Borders
- ÷ 0 from Lucerne School (New Denver) - sponsored by Drop Designs
KAST and the NTC launched the RoboGames & Circuit Training pilot during National Science & Technology Week in October 2012. The program provided participants the opportunity to design, construct, program and control a unique robot creation using a combination of Arduino circuit programming, LEGO Mindstorms robotics kit pieces, and access to a 3D printer provided by the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists and the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC.
