DHC Communications Inc. is a full service Technology Integrator servicing the East and West Kootenays from Nelson and Cranbrook BC
Every business is now very reliant on technology, in fact most businesses cannot operate in today’s environment without reliable communications and computers. The current trend in technology is something called “convergence”. Convergence is a term used to describe the ever-increasing interconnectivity and integration of various technologies. Voice Over IP telephones, computers, networks, security systems, audio visual and control are converging to a single network. Businesses and their customers demand fast and seamless technology. For example, how much of an inconvenience is it when you can’t pay with a debit or credit card because the system is down? Would you book another hotel when the first one you looked at can’t be booked online? Do you favour companies who are green friendly and have made the move to a paperless operation? All these are examples of how technology can impact a business.
Technology convergence is DHC’s specialty. As the regions only true systems integrator we have a very strong focus on connecting seemingly disparate technologies with IP networking. Some of our more common service offerings are: IT systems, telephone systems, intrusion alarms, camera systems, electronic locking, audio visual, wireless, cabling installation, and network design. No customer is too small, no job is too big. The company was founded by local Nelsonite Dave Harasym just over ten years ago and currently employs ten staff. Not long after starting DHC, Dave realized that “nothing would work if it wasn’t wired properly”. With this realization Dave went out and found the best networking in the industry. Ongoing training and certifications have been critically important, ensuring that not only are we installing the best product but that we are also adhering to current standards and specifications.
We dedicate a great deal of resources to product research and development. It is not uncommon for key staff to attend upwards of six major industry events throughout a typical year. In addition, staff also travel regularly across North America for training and certification. It is the belief of many who work here that by importing the latest in knowledge and product offerings we can create cutting edge solutions rivaling those found in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver. More importantly, this aides local Kootenay businesses by allowing them to be as competitive (or more competitive) than their counterparts in other regions.
Although the Kootenays are a small region with smaller towns and cities, the business community here has an incredible appetite for new technology. Many of our clients are very forward thinking and want to leverage the internet to increase the efficiency of their business. Paperless operation is another desire of many of the business leaders we deal with.
Some of our most recent projects include:
Red Mountain Resort – in 2010 the resort undertook a major renovation project. Electronic security, computers, fiber optic networking, audio visual, and telephone systems were all upgraded and changed substantially. One particularly interesting challenge was figuring out how to extend their network over one mile from the base lodge to the top of the mountain using a combination of varied technologies.
JL Crowe High School – the new school was built with the mindset of providing the latest technology to the students. Nearly every classroom was outfitted with high-end audio visual integration, similar to what you would find in today’s corporate boardrooms. The school infrastructure was cabled with CAT6 and has a high capacity fiber optic back bone; the capacity of this network will ensure fast access for staff and students for many years to come.
Waneta Dam Expansion – IT systems, electronic security, telephones, mobile radios, fiber optics, wireless and overall network design are a few of the services we are providing for the expansion project. Using microwave wireless links we were able to quickly and reliably extend their network and VOIP phone system over 8 kilometers to the main dam site.
