Winners of Kootenay Contraption Contest Announced
Posted November 25th, 2009 by Amber HayesIn conjunction with National Science and Technology Week Oct 18-24th, 2009 KAST offered the KOOTENAY CONTRAPTION CONTEST.
The theme for this years National Science and Technology Week is International Year of Astronomy and keeping with this theme our contest asked the question:
“If you looked into the future at 2050, what will we use and what do you think we will need to travel and/or live on another planet?”
Students can work individually or part of a team to design a contraption or a new technology “thing-a ma-jig”, “whacha-ma-callit” or “widget” and win cool prizes.
The event was hailed a success with 100 students participating from 14 different schools in SD# 20, 8, and 51.
Over 40 prizes were given out to our budding science enthusiasts.
Alesha Hall, grade 4, from McLean elementary in Rossland, was the winner of the ipod shuffle for grade 3-7 category. (see her great video below)
Elizabeth, grade 8, from Mt. Sentinel, was the winner of the digital camera, for grade 8-10 with her No Ray contraption.
This year some of the kids not only videoed their contraption concept but went so far as build their contraptions.
Way to go Kootenay / Boundary Science youth!
KAST would like to thank the major sponsors of this event: FortisBC, ScotiaBank and CBT.
